Ear Plucking & Cleaning — FAQ

Everything you need to know about ear cleaning and ear plucking — explained the Dog Love Boutique way.

What is ear plucking and why do some dogs need it?

Ear plucking is the removal of excess hair from inside the ear canal area. Some breeds grow more hair in the ears, which can trap moisture and wax. For those dogs, gentle ear plucking can improve airflow and help keep ears fresher.

Dog Love note: Not every dog needs ear plucking. If it’s not needed, we won’t do it.
Does ear plucking hurt?

Done properly, it should feel like mild discomfort at most — but sensitivity varies. If your dog is stressed, sore, or the ear looks irritated, we’ll stop and recommend the safest next step.

Our priority is calm handling and comfort — especially for quick services like ear cleaning in Tranmere and Adelaide.

Hot tip: If ears are red, smelly, or your dog is head-shaking, plucking may not be appropriate — a vet check might be best.
How often should my dog have ear cleaning or ear plucking?

It depends on breed, coat type, allergies, swimming, and how quickly wax builds up. Many dogs do well with ear cleaning every 4–8 weeks. Dogs with heavy ear hair may benefit from plucking less frequently, and only when needed.

MaintenanceEvery 4–8 weeks
Swimmers / allergiesMore frequent checks
Hairy ear breedsPluck only if needed
Can you clean ears if there’s an infection?

We can do a gentle clean, but we don’t treat infections. If we see signs like strong odour, heavy discharge, swelling, heat, or significant redness, we’ll recommend a vet visit first.

Safety first: Infected ears can be painful — cleaning too deeply can make it worse.
What should I do at home between appointments?

Keep ears dry after baths and swimming, avoid cotton buds deep in the canal, and book a quick check if you notice smell, head shaking, or scratching.

If you’d like, we can recommend what’s safe for your dog during your appointment at Dog Love Boutique (Tranmere, Adelaide).

How long does the appointment take?

Most ear cleaning / ear plucking quick services take around 10–15 minutes, depending on coat type and sensitivity.
