De-Shedding vs Dog Washing: Should You Book Short Fur or Long Fur?

This is one of the most common questions we get.

Owners often know their dog sheds.

But they are not always sure whether to book a normal wash, a de-shedding service, short fur, or long fur.

The answer depends on more than coat length alone.

What is the difference between dog washing and de-shedding?

Dog washing

A wash is for dogs who mainly need a bath, dry, and coat refresh.

  • Dirt and smell removal
  • Clean coat and skin refresh
  • Routine maintenance
  • Good for dogs not dropping major coat

De-shedding

A de-shedding service is for dogs with loose undercoat, heavy shedding, or coat blowout.

  • More work on loose fur removal
  • More brushing and coat release
  • Better for dogs shedding all over the house
  • Often more drying and more coat work
Simple version: a wash cleans the coat. A de-shed cleans the coat and targets the loose coat coming out.

When a de-shedding service makes more sense

Some dogs do not just need a bath.

They need help getting dead coat out properly.

  • Double-coated dogs
  • Seasonal shedding
  • Loose undercoat
  • Dogs dropping fur everywhere

How to choose the right booking category

This is where many people get confused.

Our short fur and long fur booking categories are not only about how the coat looks.

They are also about how the coat behaves during the service.

Short fur / smooth coat usually means:
  • Short, sleek coat
  • Quicker washing
  • Quicker drying
  • Less bulky coat work
Long fur / heavier coat usually means:
  • More coat to work through
  • Longer drying time
  • More loose fur or undercoat
  • More brushing or de-shedding time
So yes, some dogs are short-haired by breed, but still fit the long fur service category better.
True smooth coat examples

What smooth coat dogs usually look like

Smooth coat dogs usually have shorter, flatter, cleaner coats.

They do not carry the same amount of loose undercoat or drying time as heavier coat types.

Another smooth coat example. Less coat bulk. Less drying time. Simpler wash service.
Long fur example

What long fur or heavier coat bookings are for

Long fur is not just “very fluffy dogs.”

It also covers dogs with more coat to wash, dry, and manage during the appointment.

Labrador question

Why Labradors are usually booked as long fur with us

This is the big one.

Labradors are short-haired by breed.

But for our service categories, they are usually better booked as long fur.

  • They shed heavily
  • They carry more dense coat than a true smooth coat dog
  • They take longer to dry
  • They often need more coat work than a sleek short-coated dog
So a Labrador is not a “smooth coat” booking for us, even though the coat is short.
Labrador example

Think of Labradors as heavier short coats

A Lab sits in that middle zone.

Short hair. Yes.

Smooth coat service? Usually no.

They fit better into the longer-drying, heavier-shedding category.

Labrador example. Short hair, but usually too heavy-shedding and longer-drying for a true smooth coat booking.

FAQs

Common questions about washing and de-shedding

What is the difference between washing and de-shedding?

Washing is mainly about cleaning the coat.

De-shedding is about cleaning the coat and removing loose undercoat and dead fur more thoroughly.

Is a Labrador short fur or long fur for booking?

A Labrador is short-haired by breed.

But for our service categories, Labradors are usually better booked as long fur because they shed heavily and take longer to dry.

Why is a Labrador not considered a smooth coat for this service?

Because the booking category is about service time and coat workload, not just coat length.

Labs usually need more drying and more de-shedding work than a true sleek smooth coat dog.

How do I know if my dog needs de-shedding?

If your dog is dropping coat everywhere, has loose undercoat, or is blowing coat seasonally, de-shedding is usually the better option.

What if I am not sure what to book?

Ask us first.

It is better to check than to book the wrong coat category.
