Groodle Grooming Guide — Coat Types, Brushing and How Often to Groom

Groodle grooming — your dog's coat type changes everything.

Most Groodle grooming problems come from one thing: not knowing which coat type the dog actually has. Wool, fleece and feathered coats look similar to owners but behave completely differently. Wrong tools, wrong schedule, wrong expectations — all of it starts here.

Groomer's Note

Two Groodles from the same litter can have completely different coats. One tight and curly like a Poodle, the other wavy and feathered like a Golden. Same breed. Completely different care. Knowing which coat your dog has is the starting point for everything else.

Grooming Frequency

How often should a Groodle be groomed?

Wool coat Every 4–6 weeks Wool mats fast. Stretching past 6 weeks significantly increases the risk of a close clip at the next appointment.
Fleece coat Every 6–8 weeks More forgiving with consistent home brushing. Without it, 6 weeks is the safer limit.
Feathered coat Every 8–10 weeks Most manageable schedule. Focus professional grooms on the feathered areas where tangles still build.

The Coat Change Period

Between 6 and 14 months, everything can change.

🐾 Groomer Tip

A bad experience at the grooming table during the coat change period can create lasting anxiety. Short, regular visits — even just a wash — during this window make a significant difference long term.

Home Brushing

Do Groodles need brushing every day? It depends on the coat.

Coat type How often Best tools Main danger zones
Wool
Daily Short sessions beat one long weekly battle
Firm slicker brush
Fine-tooth metal comb
Ears · Chest · Armpits · Collar line
Fleece
3–4 times a week Consistency matters more than length
Medium slicker brush
Greyhound comb
Harness line · Legs · Ears
Feathered
Weekly Focus on feathered areas, not the body
Pin brush or soft slicker
Wide-tooth comb
Ears · Legs · Tail · Chest

The comb check rule

"If the comb cannot reach the skin, the coat is not properly brushed."

Run a metal comb through after every brushing session. If it catches — go back. If it glides cleanly — you are done.

Why Mats Matter

Why does my Groodle keep matting — and what happens at the groomer?

Why matted Groodles sometimes need a shorter clip — what a mat feels like, what the groomer can do, and what happens at the appointment

🐾 Groomer Tip

A Groodle who comes in on time with a manageable coat always gets a better result. Regular brushing and the right groom schedule is what makes that possible.

Quick Summary

  • Feathered is most manageable: weekly, every 8 to 10 weeks professionally
  • The coat change between 6 and 14 months is when most Groodles get their first serious mat
