A 6 kg Cavoodle and a 35 kg Labrador do not play the same game. Put them in the same yard and one of them spends the day dodging. Here is why we keep our daycare to dogs under 20 kg, what that changes about the day, and what to ask any daycare about how they group dogs.
Most daycare injuries are not fights. They are collisions. A big dog at full speed does not need to be aggressive to flatten a small one.
Why size matters more than temperament
Daycares talk a lot about temperament testing, and it matters. But two friendly dogs of very different sizes still play differently. Big dogs body slam, chase at speed and play with their weight. Small dogs play with their mouths and their feet, and they duck. When the two mix, the small dog either gets rolled or spends the day trying not to be, which is not much of a day.
- Injury risk is mostly accidental. A knee, a shoulder, a back. Small dogs, and especially long backed breeds like Dachshunds and Corgis, carry the risk. It is rarely the big dog's fault. It is physics.
- Stress hides well. A small dog who spends the day avoiding a boisterous big dog often looks fine at pick up and comes home wired, clingy or snappy. Owners read it as tired. It is usually stress.
- Play styles clash. Even gentle giants overwhelm. A Golden Retriever who wants to wrestle is a lovely dog and a terrible playmate for a 5 kg Maltese.
- Toys and resources. Small dogs lose every contest over a ball. That builds either resentment or resource guarding, neither of which you want coming home with you.
What "small and medium" actually means here
Our line is 20 kg. That is not an exact science, but it keeps the play group roughly the same scale, and it is the point where play styles start to change. Below it you get the breeds we see most in Adelaide's eastern suburbs.
Cavoodles and Moodles, Cavaliers, Maltese and Maltese crosses, Shih Tzus, Toy and Miniature Poodles, Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Miniature Dachshunds, Jack Russells, Bichons, small Spoodles.
Mini Groodles, larger Spoodles and Cavoodles, Cocker Spaniels, French Bulldogs, Corgis, Beagles, Border Terriers, Whippets, Schnauzers, small Staffies, Cockapoos and many mixed breeds.
Within those two groups we still match on energy. A lazy 9 kg Cavalier and a rocket fuelled 9 kg Jack Russell are not the same dog. The size line gets everyone to a safe starting point; the day to day matching is Gabi's job.
If your dog is 22 kg and calm, we will probably still say no. Not because your dog is a problem, but because a line only works if it is a line. Every size is always welcome in our grooming salon, and we are happy to point you to daycares that run big dog groups well.
What a size matched day looks like
When every dog in the yard is a similar scale, the whole day runs differently. Less refereeing, more actual play, and calmer rest.
- Play is fair. Chase games go both ways. Wrestling is between equals. Nobody has to duck.
- Rest is real. Small dogs will not settle if there is a large dog pacing past their bed. When the group is matched, the napping zone is quiet.
- Introductions are gentler. A nervous new dog meeting one or two calm dogs its own size is a very different experience to meeting a Labrador.
- Numbers stay low. We cap at 15 a day. Matched size plus a small group means every dog gets watched and every owner gets photos of their actual dog, not a crowd.
The trade offs, honestly
Size matched daycare is not the right answer for everyone, and it comes with limits worth knowing before you book.
- Fewer places. A capped group of 15 fills up, and our busiest days book out.
- No option for your big dog. If you have a Cavoodle and a Labrador, they cannot come here together.
- Less "everything under one roof". We do not board overnight and we do not run buses.
- A yard where your small dog is never the smallest thing in it by 30 kg.
- A team who knows every dog by name because there are only 15 of them.
- A calmer dog at pick up. Tired from play, not from vigilance.
Questions to ask any daycare about groups
Whether you come to us or go elsewhere, these five questions tell you almost everything about how a daycare handles size. Good daycares answer them without hesitation.
- How do you split the groups? By size, by temperament, or not at all. "We watch them" is not a split.
- What is the biggest dog my dog will share a space with? Get a number in kilos, not a breed name.
- How many dogs per person? One person to 15 is attentive. One to 30 is crowd control.
- What happens if a dog is being too much? The answer should involve separating and resting, not just watching.
- Can I see the yard while a group is in it? Photos are nice. Standing at the fence at 11am tells you the truth.

Is there a small dog only daycare in Adelaide?
Dog Love in Tranmere takes small and medium dogs only, up to 20 kg, with a maximum of 15 dogs a day. Some larger centres run separate small dog groups within a bigger facility; ask how strictly the groups are kept apart.
What counts as a small or medium dog for daycare?
At Dog Love, any dog up to 20 kg. In practice that covers Cavoodles, Cavaliers, Maltese, Shih Tzus, Dachshunds, Corgis, French Bulldogs, Cocker Spaniels, Mini Groodles, Beagles and most small mixed breeds.
Is daycare safe for small dogs?
Yes, when the group is matched on size and watched properly. The main risk for small dogs is being knocked over by much larger dogs in play, which a size limit removes.
Can my Cavoodle go to daycare with big dogs?
Some cope and some do not, and the ones who do not often hide it. If your Cavoodle comes home wired, clingy or snappy after daycare with large dogs, that is usually stress rather than tiredness, and a matched group is worth trying.
My dog is just over 20 kg. Can you make an exception?
No, and we are sorry about that. A size limit only works if it is applied to everyone. All sizes are welcome for grooming, and we are happy to suggest daycares that run large dog groups well.
