Best dog detangling spray in Australia A groomer's guide for 2026
The best detangling spray lets the brush move through everyday knots with less pulling, then leaves the coat soft once it dries. For fleece and curly coats, ours is Dogify Detangling Spray. Here is why, how the main kinds of spray compare, and how to get the most from whichever bottle you choose.

Dogify Detangling Spray
We used more than 20 detangling sprays in our Tranmere salon before we made our own, then refined it at the grooming table over two years and dozens of rounds. It is the bottle we reach for on every fleece and curly coat.
- Made for fleece and curly coats
- Adds slip so knots loosen with less pulling
- Calms static and flyaway hair
- Wet or dry coat, no rinsing
230mL · Same day dispatch before 2pm Adelaide time · Free pickup from Tranmere
A note on fairness: we are the groomers behind Dogify, and we sell it. This is our salon's recommendation from the grooming table, not an independent lab test.

Why Dogify is our pick for fleece and curly coats
A spray can feel impressive for the first few strokes and still fall short once the coat dries. We judged ours on the whole result.
When the same knots keep coming back behind the ears or under the harness, you need real slip for the brush, the right tools and a routine you can keep up between grooms. That shaped the brief for Dogify.
- Slip where you need it. Hairs move past one another, so everyday tangles work loose with a lighter hand.
- A soft finish between grooms. The coat is conditioned without feeling heavy, so regular brushing at home stays practical.
- Help with static. Smoothing and conditioning agents settle flyaway hair as you brush.
- A clear coat focus. Developed around wavy fleece and curly coats, which trap loose hair and hide knots beneath the surface.
- Simple directions. Shake, spray, wait 30 seconds, brush gently and check with a comb.
We refined the formula over two years and dozens of rounds, judging every version on the dogs we groom: how the brush moved, how the coat felt once dry, whether it left any residue and how much spray each coat needed.
After more than 20 sprays, this is the bottle we trust most on a fleece or curly coat.
How the main kinds of detangling spray compare
Most sprays on the Australian market fall into one of four groups. Choose by your dog's coat and how you will use the bottle, not by the claims on the front.
| Type | Best for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Coat specific leave in spray Our pick | Fleece and curly coats brushed at home between grooms. | Made for one coat family, so the slip and finish suit those coats. Dogify is this type. |
| All coat detangling and finishing spray | Homes with several coat types, or a shiny finish after brushing. | One formula has to suit every coat, so check the label matches your dog's texture. |
| Concentrate you dilute | Groomers and multi dog homes after a lower cost per use. | The strength depends on your mixing, so follow the dilution on the label exactly. |
| Strongly scented conditioning spray | Owners who love a noticeable scent on the coat. | Scent is personal, and some dogs are sensitive to strong fragrance. Try a small area first. |

Other sprays do useful jobs, and some are made for the same coats. We reach for Dogify because we built it around the fleece and curly coats on our own grooming table, with the brush movement and finish we wanted. For owners caring for those coats at home, it is our first recommendation.
The formula matters more than a “free from” claim
Dogify contains a conditioning silicone called amodimethicone, alongside conditioning agents, hyaluronic acid, panthenol and aloe vera. Each part has its own job.
Brushing slip
Amodimethicone smooths the surface of each hair so strands slide past each other. That is a big part of what makes a tangle easier to work through.
Smoothing and static
Behentrimonium methosulfate and dipalmitoylethyl dimonium chloride are conditioning agents that smooth the coat and help manage static.
Coat conditioning
Hyaluronic acid, panthenol (provitamin B5) and aloe vera sit in the conditioning blend for moisture and softness.
A light scent
Dogify contains a light fragrance. We chose it for the finish we wanted in our salon, though scent preference and tolerance vary from dog to dog.
A water based spray can still contain silicone. Water is the first ingredient in Dogify, and amodimethicone is in the formula too. Judge a spray by the finished product and how your dog's coat responds, rather than by one ingredient on the list.
The same goes for oils, proteins and leave in conditioners. Each can be a useful part of a grooming formula. Too much product, the wrong match for the coat or a routine that does not suit it is what leaves a coat feeling heavy. An ingredient list alone cannot tell you how a spray will perform.
Is Dogify right for your dog's coat?
Start with the coat you can see and feel. A breed name is a useful clue, but oodles can carry very different coats.
Dogify suits many Cavoodles, Groodles, Labradoodles, Spoodles, Poodles and other dogs with fleece or curly coats. An oodle with a straight coat needs its texture checked on its own.
Fleece and curly coats
- Wavy fleece: soft waves that knot wherever the coat rubs.
- Curly: springy curls that hide tangles close to the skin.
Straight, silky, double or wire coats
These coats have different needs, so choose products and tools made for them. Our current spray is focused on fleece and curly coats.
Five things to check in any detangling spray
The claims on the bottle matter less than your next brushing session. These five checks tell you whether a spray suits your dog.
- Useful slip. The brush meets less resistance when you use the spray as directed.
- A finish you like. Feel the coat once it is dry and again the next day. Note any tackiness or a heavy, coated feel.
- The right coat focus. The spray is made for your dog's texture and suits your routine.
- Clear directions. You know whether it is ready to use, how much to apply and whether it needs rinsing.
- Comfort during use. Your dog is relaxed with the spraying and brushing. Stop if you notice irritation or distress.
These are the same questions we asked of every version of Dogify. A good spray should earn its place beside your slicker brush and comb.
How to use Dogify for easier brushing
Use it on a wet or dry coat. For everyday brushing between baths, work in small sections so you find the tangles beneath the surface.
- Shake and apply. Spray straight onto a small knot, or mist evenly over the coat from about 10cm away for everyday brushing. Start with a small amount.
- Wait 30 seconds. Give the spray time to soften and condition the area before the brush goes in.
- Brush gently. Use light strokes in the direction the coat grows. Hold the hair near its base so you are not pulling on the skin, and work through loose tangles a little at a time.
- Check with a metal comb. Comb through each section. If it catches, pause and check the spot, then repeat on small, loose tangles without forcing the comb. When the comb glides through to the skin, that section is done.
Check the friction spots first: behind the ears, under the collar or harness, the armpits, groin and tail base. Short sessions with breaks make the routine easier to keep up.

A loose tangle and a tight mat need different care
A detangling spray helps with everyday tangles and small knots. When hair has felted tight against the skin, brushing harder can hurt your dog.
- A small, loose knot. Apply the spray as directed and work gently, checking your dog is comfortable throughout.
- A dense mat, a pelted patch or sore skin. Pause home detangling and have a professional groomer look at it.
- A dog showing discomfort. Stop and take a break. A spray makes brushing easier, but your dog's comfort always comes first.

Detangler, dematting spray or leave in conditioner?
These names overlap more than the labels suggest.
A detangler is made to help the brush move through knots. A leave in conditioner adds conditioning without a rinse. A dematting spray is marketed towards existing tangles and mats.
Dogify is a leave in conditioning and detangling spray. You apply it, wait 30 seconds, brush and comb. It looks after the brushing routine between baths, alongside the shampoo and rinse out conditioner you use on bath day.
Choose by the directions, the coat it suits and the results you need. The word “dematting” on a bottle does not make dense mats that sit tight against the skin safe to remove at home.
Detangling spray questions we hear in the salon
What is the best dog detangling spray for a Cavoodle?
For a Cavoodle with a fleece or curly coat, Dogify is our first choice, based on our salon experience and the formula we developed. Check the coat first: some Cavoodles have a straighter coat with different grooming needs.
Does Dogify contain silicone?
Yes. It contains amodimethicone, a conditioning silicone that smooths the hair and adds slip for the brush. The formula also includes conditioning agents, hyaluronic acid, panthenol and aloe vera. The full ingredient list is on the product page.
Do I use it on wet or dry hair?
Either. Shake well, spray straight onto a small knot or mist evenly from about 10cm away, wait 30 seconds, then brush gently and check with a comb. It does not need rinsing.
Can I use it for regular brushing?
Yes, it was developed for brushing fleece and curly coats between grooms. Start with a small amount and match how often you brush to the coat's length, condition and how quickly it knots. If the coat feels heavy, use a lighter mist, and ask your groomer if it keeps happening.
Will it remove an existing mat?
It helps loosen everyday tangles and small knots. A dense mat sitting tight against the skin, or a pelted patch, needs a professional groomer. Never force a brush or comb through it.
Can I use human detangling spray instead?
Choose a product made for dogs and follow its directions. Human hair products are made for human skin and hair, so ask your vet before using one on your dog. We cover this in more detail in can I use human detangler on my dog?
Is it suitable for puppies or sensitive skin?
Check the label and ask your vet if your puppy is very young or your dog has a skin condition. Try a small area first, avoid irritated skin and stop if irritation occurs. We use it on the dogs in our salon, but every dog's skin is different.
Which tools do I need with the spray?
A slicker brush used with light pressure, then a metal comb to check each section. The comb should pass gently through to the skin. A coat that looks smooth on top can still hide tangles underneath.
