Why a Labradoodle takes more harness thought than most breeds
The harness that suits the Labradoodle down the street can be wrong for yours.
- The size moves a long way.A miniature often sits around 7 to 11kg, a medium around 13 to 20kg, and a standard can reach 30kg or more. That is three harness sizes and, at the top end, hardware that is genuinely strong rather than decorative.
- The coat holds on to loose hair.Labradoodle hair does not shed away like a Labrador's. It stays in the coat, and wherever gear rubs, loose hairs twist and lock together.
- The mats follow the straps. The spots we demat most are exactly where a harness touches: behind the front legs, across the chest and over the shoulders. Already seeing rubbed or knotted patches? Read our guide to harness rubbing under the arms.
- A collar is not the answer.A strong dog leaning into a collar puts all that force through the throat. The fix is a harness chosen for the coat as carefully as for the pull.
A Labradoodle harness has two jobs: hold a strong dog steady and leave the coat alone. Choose for only one and the other will cost you.
What to look for in a coat friendly Labradoodle harness
Five details that deal with the pulling and most of the matting at once.
- A soft, breathable lining, never raw webbing.Smooth mesh slides over the coat, and open sides stop moisture and warmth sitting against the skin. Bare webbing grinds loose hair into felt on every stride.
- Four adjustment points. The coat changes length dramatically between grooms. Four points fit a fresh trim and a grown out teddy coat.
- Straps that sit clear of the armpits. The strap behind the front legs belongs well back from the crease. That crease is where Labradoodle matting starts.
- A front clip.A front clip turns an enthusiastic puller back toward you. Pair it with our guide on how to stop a dog pulling on the leash.
- A top handle and real hardware. The handle earns itself the first time you steady a big standard at a kerb.
A little forgiveness
The loose, wavy coat. It still knots under a harness, but gives you more time before a rub turns into a mat.
Higher stakes
The tight, springy coat that bounces back when pressed. It felts faster, fastest of all when damp, so fit and a comb after walks matter more. Beach days and wet winter mornings are when knots begin.
Not sure which you have? Our guide to telling a fleece coat from a curly coat shows how to check, and the Labradoodle grooming guide covers the routine for each. If the coat is already past home brushing, our oodle grooming team in Adelaide can reset it gently.

Sizing a harness for a miniature, medium or standard Labradoodle
Measure, never guess. Labradoodles land across four harness sizes, so the breed alone will not tell you.

- Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the chest.Just behind the front legs, snug but not tight, with the coat lying flat rather than fluffed up.
- Between two sizes? Size up.Take the larger one and bring it in on the adjusters. Slightly generous and tuned down is kind to a coat; slightly tight never stops rubbing.
- Check the fit with two fingers. Two flat fingers should slide under every strap, with the rear strap well clear of the armpits.

The two habits that stop harness matting on a Labradoodle
This is most of the battle. Both take less than a minute.
Harness off at home
Gear worn all day rubs the same three spots for hours. On at the door, off at the door.
Comb the friction zones
After big walks, comb behind the front legs, across the chest and over the shoulders. After wet or sandy walks, dry first, then comb.
The harness we use and recommend for Labradoodles
We compared six harness brands in our Tranmere salon and used the DogLove Pro on our own dogs for two years before stocking it. It is the only harness we stock.

A harness that rubs the same spots daily, or wraps a low shedding coat in fabric that holds moisture, turns loose hair into mats at the skin, and the kindest fix is then often a short clip. The DogLove Pro No Pull Dog Harness is built around that problem, and it is the top pick in our guide to the best dog harness in Australia.

Control for a strong dog
Front clip for pullers, back clip for easy walks, padded handle for kerbs.

Gentle on the coat
Smooth padded mesh slides over the hair; open sides let the coat breathe.

Four adjustment points
Let it out for a teddy coat, bring it in after a groom.
3M reflective trim, 13 colours
Seen on early starts and late walks, from Teal to Navy Blazer, with a matching lead.
Two ways to put it on

- Your Labradoodle pulls with more enthusiasm than manners.
- You are tired of dematting the same armpits.
- You want a handle for a big standard.
- It is a walking harness. For the car, use a restraint built and tested for travel.
- Little escape artist? Fit it snug and read our guide to stopping a dog backing out of a harness.
- Still deciding? Read harness vs collar.
We sell the DogLove Pro, so we are not neutral. We stock it because it is the harness we trust on fleece and curly coats.
Labradoodle harness questions we hear in the salon
What size harness does a Labradoodle need?
Measure the chest at its widest point, just behind the front legs. Smaller miniatures usually fit S (43 to 56cm), larger miniatures and smaller mediums M (56 to 69cm), most mediums and many standards L (69 to 81cm), and large standards XL (81 to 107cm). Between two sizes, take the larger one.
Can a harness cause matting on a Labradoodle?
Yes, through friction. Loose hair stays in a Labradoodle coat, so wherever the harness rubs it twists into knots, usually behind the front legs and across the chest. A soft lining, a proper fit, harness off at home and a comb after walks prevent almost all of it.
Is a harness or a collar better for a Labradoodle?
A harness for walks. Leaning into a collar puts all that force through the throat; a harness spreads it across the chest and shoulders. Keep the collar for ID tags.
My Labradoodle pulls hard. Will a no pull harness fix it?
It helps a great deal, best alongside training. A front clip turns your dog back toward you rather than letting them power ahead. Our guide on stopping a dog pulling on the leash covers the training side.
Should I take my Labradoodle's harness off at home?
Yes. A harness worn all day is the most common cause of felted armpits we see in the salon. On for walks, off at home.
What size harness does a Labradoodle puppy need?
Fit a puppy to the chest they have today, not the chest they will grow into. Young puppies often start in XS (33 to 43cm). A harness bought to last a year slides and rubs, which is how the first mats start. Move up a size when two fingers no longer fit under the straps.
Does the harness have to go over my Labradoodle's head?
No. You can slip it over the head and buckle the chest and belly, or unclip the neck, wrap it around and clip it shut so nothing passes over the head. Head shy dogs usually prefer the neck release.
What if I order the wrong size?
Exchange it within 30 days if unused and in its packaging. Drop it at our Tranmere salon free, or post it back at your cost, and we send the new size free.
