Best Harness for Groodles: A Groomer's Guide
Dog LoveShare
The best harness for a Groodle, from a groomer's chair
A Groodle is a big dog in a coat that knots. Put a badly chosen harness on that combination and you get felted armpits by the end of the month, plus a dog strong enough to tow you down the street. Both problems are solved by the same decision.

On a Groodle you are managing two things at once, the pull and the coat. A harness that only handles the pull will cost you the coat.
Why a Groodle is a harder harness fit than most dogs
Golden Retriever size, Poodle coat. Most breeds give you one problem to solve. A Groodle gives you two, and they pull against each other.
The size is the first half. A standard Groodle can sit anywhere from 30 to 40kg with real shoulder strength behind it, so the hardware has to be genuinely rated rather than decorative. The coat is the second half. Groodle hair does not shed away the way a Retriever's does; it stays in the coat, and wherever gear rubs, those loose hairs twist and lock. The spots we demat most on Groodles are the exact spots a harness touches, behind the front legs, across the chest plate, and over the shoulders.
This is not an argument for walking a Groodle on a collar. A dog that size leaning into a collar is putting all of that force through its throat. The answer is a harness chosen for the coat as carefully as it is chosen for the pull. If your dog already has rubbed or bald patches under the arms, start with our guide on harness rubbing under the arms.
What to look for
The five things that matter on a Groodle
- Soft, breathable lining, no raw webbing. Smooth mesh slides over a fleece coat, and open sides let air reach the coat so moisture and warmth do not sit against the skin. Bare webbing grinds loose hair into felt on every stride, and a Groodle takes a lot of strides.
- Four adjustment points. A Groodle coat changes length dramatically between grooms. Four points let the same harness fit a fresh trim and a grown out teddy coat.
- Clear of the armpits. The strap behind the front legs wants to sit well back, not wedged into the crease. That crease is where Groodle matting starts almost every time.
- A front clip. Groodles are enthusiastic rather than difficult, and a front clip turns forward pressure back toward you instead of letting 35kg set the pace. Pair it with our guide on how to stop a dog pulling on the leash.
- A top handle and real hardware. The handle earns itself the first time you need to steady your dog at a kerb or lift them into a boot.
Your coat type changes the stakes
Fleece coats, the loose wavy ones, give you a bit of forgiveness. Curly coats, the tight springy ones that bounce back when you press them, felt faster, and they felt fastest of all when they are damp.
If your Groodle is curly, harness fit and a comb through after walks matter more, not less. Beach days and winter mornings are exactly when the knots begin.
Our Groodle grooming guide shows how to tell the two apart, and how often to brush a Groodle covers the routine. If the coat is already past home brushing, our oodle grooming team in Adelaide can reset it gently.

Sizing a harness for a Groodle
Measure, never guess. Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, and read the number with the coat lying flat rather than fluffed up.
Groodles come in three sizes in Australia and they land in three different harness sizes, so breed alone will not tell you the answer. Check the measurement against the chart below.
| Size | Chest | Rough weight |
|---|---|---|
| MMini Groodles | 56 to 69cm | 9.1 to 16kg |
| LMedium Groodles | 69 to 81cm | 16.1 to 30kg |
| XLStandard Groodles | 81 to 107cm | Over 30kg |
Once it is on, two flat fingers should slide comfortably under every strap. If your dog measures between two sizes, take the larger one and bring it in on the adjusters. A harness that is slightly generous and tuned down is kind to a coat; one that is slightly tight never stops rubbing. Growing puppy? Fit the chest they have today and recheck the straps every couple of weeks. Our harness fit guide has the step by step.
Type their chest measurement on the harness page and it picks the size for you.
Coat length changes fit. A harness set over a full grown out coat sits loose the day your dog comes home from the salon, and one fitted on a fresh groom turns snug as the coat comes back. Check the straps again after every groom.
The two habits that protect the coat
This is most of the battle
- Harness off at home. Gear worn all day rubs the same three spots for hours. On at the door, off at the door.
- Comb the friction zones after big walks. Behind the front legs, across the chest, over the shoulders. Wet and sandy walks especially.
If a knot slides when you push it sideways, gentle combing will clear it. If it feels tight and fixed against the skin, book a groomer instead of working at it. That one is a job for professional hands.
The harness we use and recommend
After watching what survives curly and fleece coats in the salon, we stock one harness: the DogLove Pro No Pull Dog Harness.
We used it on our own dogs for two years before we ever put it on our shelves. Here is why it suits a Groodle so well.
Made for a strong puller
A front clip turns forward pressure back toward you, a back clip suits relaxed everyday walks, and a padded top handle steadies a big dog.
Unclips at the neck
Open the neck buckle, wrap it around and clip it shut. No wrestling a big fluffy head through a tight loop.
Breathable padded mesh
Soft padding and mesh sit gently on a thick coat, and open sides let air move, so warmth and damp are not trapped against the skin.
Four adjustment points
Fits a fresh trim and a grown out teddy coat. Loosen or tighten in seconds as the coat comes back.
3M reflective trim
So you are seen on winter mornings and after dark.

Two ways to put it on

Why this matters so much on a Groodle. Loose hair stays in a Groodle coat instead of dropping out, so a harness that rubs in the same spots every day, or wraps the coat in fabric that holds moisture and warmth, turns that hair into mats close to the skin. Add the strength of a 30kg dog leaning into the straps and that friction only grows. A breathable harness that fits properly, spreads the pull across the chest and comes off between walks is one of the simplest ways to keep a Groodle coat long and soft.

A lovely match if
- Your Groodle leans into the lead and you want more control without a collar.
- You want to keep a fleece or curly coat long and soft between grooms.
- Your dog wriggles or ducks when something comes towards their face.
- You want one harness for walks, beach days and lifting into the car.
A few honest notes
- It is made for walking. For car trips, use a restraint built and tested for travel.
- Between two sizes? Go up one and bring it in on the adjusters.
- Growing puppy? Groodle pups grow fast, so fit the chest they have today and recheck it often.
- Little escape artist? Fit it snugly, and see our guide to stopping a dog backing out of a harness.
We sell the DogLove Pro, so we are not neutral. We recommend it because it is the harness we trust on curly and fleece coats.

Groodle harness questions we hear in the salon
What size harness does a Groodle need?
Measure the chest at its widest point behind the front legs. Mini Groodles usually fit M (56 to 69cm), medium Groodles fit L (69 to 81cm), and standard Groodles fit XL (81 to 107cm). Two flat fingers should slide under every strap, and if your dog falls between two sizes, take the larger one.
Can a harness cause matting on a Groodle?
Yes, through friction. Loose hair stays in a Groodle coat rather than dropping out, so anywhere the harness rubs it twists into knots, usually behind the front legs and across the chest. A soft lining, a proper fit, taking the harness off at home and a quick comb through the friction zones after walks prevent almost all of it.
Is a harness or a collar better for a Groodle?
A harness for walks. A Groodle is strong enough that leaning into a collar puts all of that force through the throat, while a harness spreads it across the chest. The collar stays on for ID tags.
My Groodle pulls hard. Will a no pull harness fix it?
It helps a great deal, and it works best alongside training. A front clip redirects forward pressure so your dog turns back toward you rather than powering ahead. Our guide on stopping a dog pulling on the leash covers the training side.
Should I take my Groodle's harness off at home?
Yes. A harness worn all day rubs the same spots for hours and is the most common cause of felted armpits we see in the salon. On for walks, off at home.
Does the harness go on over my Groodle's head?
It can, but it doesn't have to. Unclip the neck and wrap it around so nothing goes over their head, or keep it clipped and slip it over. Then clip the belly buckles. For a dog that is unsure about things coming towards its face, the unclip way is the easiest start.
Can I use it in the car?
Not as a safety restraint. The DogLove Pro is a walking harness, so for car trips use a restraint that is built and tested for travel.
What if the size is wrong?
Exchange it within 30 days, as long as it is unused and still in its packaging. Drop it back to our Tranmere salon, or post it back to us at your cost, and we send the new size at no charge. Our refund policy has the details.
